World Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Week (WAAW)
Observed from 18 to 24 November, World Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Week (WAAW) raises global awareness about antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and promotes the responsible use of antibiotics.
Launched by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2015, WAAW highlights the dangers of overusing antibiotics, especially for viral infections like colds and flu, which accelerates bacterial resistance. This resistance undermines the effectiveness of antibiotics, posing a major challenge for healthcare professionals who must balance appropriate prescribing with minimising unnecessary use. Some bacteria have already become resistant to even the strongest antibiotics available.
This year’s WAAW campaign theme—Educate, Advocate, Act Now—focuses on safeguarding antibiotics through responsible use.
